Boost Your Confidence with Kybella®

Explore Kybella® as a Non-Surgical Option for Double Chin Reduction

Kybella®

Fat-Dissolving Injectable

Learn about Kybella®, a revolutionary treatment option for treating the stubborn double chin area. Kybella® is an FDA approved synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that breaks down and helps us absorb dietary fat. Kybella® injections dissolve fat cells in the submental area (area beneath the chin) as a non-surgical option for jawline contouring and improving the profile of the face.

Procedure Overview

During a Kybella® treatment session, one of our skilled practitioners injects small and evenly spaced amounts of product in the submental area using a fine needle. The treatment itself only takes 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the area. Immediately following the procedure and for several days after, swelling can be expected. Kybella® is recommended as a series of treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart in order to create optimal outcomes.

Kybella® is effective in:

  • Reducing submental fullness (double chin)

  • Dissolving excess fat under the chin that can blunt the borders of the jawline

  • Contouring facial profile

Before & Aftercare

    • Please plan your treatment to allow for several days of potential swelling and bruising. Swelling may last up to 4 weeks. Consider a scarf or turtleneck to camouflage when treating the chin, jawline, or cheeks.

    • Always inform your provider of all medications, including supplements you may be taking and whether there are any recent changes to your medications such as a new antibiotic.

    • Always inform your provider of your full medical, surgical, social, psychological, allergy, and medication history.

    • Certain medications can thin your blood and increase your risk of bruising. These medications include Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Ginko Biloba, Garlic, Ginseng, Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, as well as others. These medications should be avoided 14 DAYS PRIOR to your procedure if possible.

    • Other medications such as aspirin, blood thinners, and antiplatelet medications will also thin your blood but should NOT be stopped without discussing it with your doctor first.

    • Avoid alcoholic beverages for 48 HOURS PRIOR to your procedure to reduce the chance of bruising.

    • You may consider starting oral arnica 7-10 DAYS PRIOR to your procedure to reduce risk of bruising. Follow the directions on the bottle.

    • If you have an active cold sore/fever blister, canker sore, shingles you will need to postpone treatment. If you are prone to developing cold sores/fever blisters or shingles, please contact us 1 week before treatment for recommendations.

    • Please note that you cannot be treated with Kybella® if any of the following pertain to you:

      • If you have undergone any recent cancer treatment including chemotherapy or radiation within the last 12 months

      • If you are immunocompromised or are taking medications that suppress your immune system

      • If you have had any procedures/conditions that could put you in an inflamed state 2 WEEKS BEFORE your procedure. These procedures/conditions include any surgeries, dental procedures, immunizations, illnesses (bacterial, viral, or fungal), or recent antibiotic use

      • You may not be treated if you have a history of difficulty swallowing, nerve injury, or weakness in the lower face.

      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

    • Notify your provider if you have a history or any surgeries/procedures of the face or neck.

    • Eat a small meal or a snack before your appointment.

    • You should expect swelling and redness. You may also experience bruising, pain, tenderness, numbness, induration, and areas of firm nodules. These symptoms normally last around 7 days, but for some, may last up to 4 weeks. Some patients will experience numbness for longer than 4 weeks.

    • You may elect to ice the area post treatment but must do so very carefully. Use an ice pack with the fabric side against the skin or wrap a soft plastic ice pack in a wet thin towel. Apply the ice pack approximately 30 seconds on, and 30 seconds off. Icing too vigorously can cause frostbite and scarring. You may apply a cold compress to the area for 20 minutes per hour, and you may do this hourly for up to 3 days.

    • Do not participate in strenuous activity and avoid extreme temperatures of heat (i.e. Jacuzzi, hot showers, exercise, etc.) for 3 days following treatment.

    • Do not scratch, pick, or traumatize the area in any way. Do not massage or manipulate the injection sites.

    • You may apply your normal skin care regimen and sunscreen, 4 HOURS AFTER your treatment.

These medications should be avoided for 3 DAYS FOLLOWING your procedure if possible.

    • Other medications such as aspirin, blood thinners, and antiplatelet medications will also thin your blood but should NOT be stopped without discussing it with your doctor first.

    • Avoid alcoholic beverages for 48 HOURS FOLLOWING your procedure to reduce the chance of bruising.

    • Reduce your salt/sodium intake for 3 days post treatment to avoid excess swelling.

    • Sleep with your head elevated to avoid excess swelling.

    • Call the office if you have any difficulty swallowing, crusting, or scabbing, asymmetry of your smile or any other unusual symptoms.

    • Kybella® treatments are done in a series, for best results we recommend a series of 2-4 treatments spaced about 2-3 months apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • There is only mild discomfort associated with the procedure and most patients consider it quite tolerable. We do not typically numb the area for the procedure but do apply ice to minimize discomfort. Some patients experience mild discomfort from the Kybella® itself rather than the injection but that typically resolves over minutes to hours.

  • Although Kybella® starts working immediately, we typically recommend waiting 4-6 weeks to see a final result. This will allow time for the medication to work and for the swelling to completely resolve.

  • How many treatments you need depends entirely on your anatomy and how much fat will need to be dissolved. It is not uncommon, however, for patients to receive 2-4 sessions for a treatment course.

  • Kybella® treatments are typically sold in a package for $1800 regardless of the number of sessions or $600/session.

  • Treatments with Kybella® are considered permanent, as the fat cells that create submental fullness (double chin) are destroyed.

  • Kybella® is only FDA approved to be used in the submental (double chin) area. Although many other medical spas may use Kybella® on other areas of the face, we at June Aesthetics and Medspa, will only administer it in the FDA approved area.
